Commonly called Jogja, Yogyakarta is Java’s cultural capital. It’s the only region in the country still ruled by a sultan — proving how tightly it values its age-old traditions and way of life. Quite impressive, given that it’s an urban area of over 3 million inhabitants.
The nearby ancient temples Borobudur and Prambanan are one of the main reasons that travellers visit Yogyakarta, but the city has much more to offer than just temples. Art lovers will enjoy its street art, boutique cafes, and iconic menggambar fabric. Head oper to Malioboro Road and Kotagede for some amazing finds and jewellery. If you’d like a glimpse of the city’s architecture and history, Kraton Sinuhun Palace and Taman Sari are a must on your itinerary.
